Targeting

What is Targeting?

Targeting is the method of deciding which prospects should receive your outreach based on parameters like company size, job title, industry, geography, tech stack, and intent signals. It ensures messages reach people who are both relevant and likely to respond. Accurate targeting improves engagement quality and supports stable inbox placement.

Why does targeting matter in cold outreach?

Targeting matters because inbox providers assess engagement behavior when deciding where to place your messages. When outreach goes to people who are unlikely to care, deletes and non engagement increase. These patterns weaken reputation and reduce inbox placement. Strong targeting keeps engagement healthier and protects long term deliverability.

How should targeting be executed for safe sending?

Targeting should use clear ICP criteria, validated data, and contextually relevant fields such as role, seniority, or recent activity. Lists should be filtered before every send to remove mismatched contacts. Weekly reviews help ensure no irrelevant segments slip in. Consistent refinement prevents wasted sends and protects sender reputation.

How does strong targeting improve deliverability?

Strong targeting improves deliverability by increasing the percentage of opens and replies while reducing quick deletes and spam complaints. Providers rely on these signals to judge sender relevance. When engagement stays consistently positive across multiple days, filtering decreases, inbox placement improves, and outbound programs scale more predictably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How specific should ICP criteria be for targeting to work well?
ICP criteria should be narrow enough to remove irrelevant contacts but broad enough to provide a healthy list size. Many teams use factors like industry, employee count, revenue range, and role seniority. Updating ICP criteria every quarter helps keep targeting aligned with current goals and improves reply rates over time.
Should targeting change depending on the outreach sequence?
Yes, targeting can adjust based on the goals of each sequence. Early sequences might focus on high intent prospects, while later ones may reach broader audiences. Aligning message angle with segment characteristics keeps engagement predictable. Changing targeting without adjusting messaging often leads to inconsistent results.
What signals indicate that targeting is too broad?
Low open rates, low reply rates, and high delete before open behavior often indicate overly broad targeting. Complaints or spam reports may also rise. When these patterns appear for several days in a row, narrowing the list and tightening ICP criteria helps restore healthier engagement and deliverability.
Does better targeting reduce bounce rates?
Yes, better targeting often reduces bounce rates because it encourages the use of fresher, more accurate data sources. High quality segments usually rely on verified or recently updated information. Lower bounce rates improve reputation signals, and avoiding invalid addresses protects long term inbox placement across all domains.
